“Jailhouse Rock”
1957“Jailhouse Rock” was released in 1957 by Elvis Presley, the song was the Billboard Song of the Year the same year. Elvis starred in a movie that year with the same name (Jailhouse Rock) where he played a wrongly accused convict who became a star after he was released. The famous scene of Elvis performs the song inside prison. The score was written by Leiber and Stoller, they later called it “Jailhouse Rock” after the movie, and it took off. Other songs that were released in 1957 were: Treat Me Nice, I Want To Be Free, Baby I Don’t Care, Don’t Leave Me Now (Elvis’ Piano Version), Don’t Leave Me (Hit Record Version). “Without Elvis, some of my favorite music wouldn’t exist,” Summer Johnson (grade 11) said. Elvis became the King of Rock mainly because he was one of the only people to get multiple of his songs on the billboard top songs. He didn’t start out well-liked, most people didn’t like Rock music, he was one of the first to start the trend. Elvis’ rise to fame influenced many people and now we had bands and people such as The Beatles, Metallica, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Green Day, 3 Doors Down, The Police, Yes, R.E.M, Kansas, Nirvana, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. “I never knew Elvis made such a big impact on music,” Gisselle Medrano (grade 11) said.
