The boiling point of Chemistry

Chemistry, the multi-course class that can improve your life.

Chemistry is the study of the behavior of matter and its properties. Chemistry in Okeechobee high school typically comes in 2 courses (Chemistry I and Chemistry II). These classes can be taken at the 4 typical levels of education (Regular, Honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment) with a few different teachers. Some chemistry teachers at Okeechobee high school are Wendy Riester, Melinda Gray, and Sam Szentmartoni. There are rewards to taking the class such as (dual enrollment opportunities, more high school credits, and becoming proficient with the measurements and tools used in science. Chemistry also has practical applications too, such as knowing how to convert back and forth from imperial to metric units, knowing how to round in significant figures (which is useful in most scientific fields), and knowing what the units are such as (mmHg, Cal, Joules, and more). I this class it is important to not play around because of the chemicals used. “I am a high school teacher and you are a high school student, so act like it”. said Wendy Riester. In chemistry, there are a lot of hands-on activities such as labs that correspond to each topic in chemistry such as (significant figures, density, calorimetry, and phase changes) which can be fun. If the Honors or AP course is taken then you will have to do a science fair project and present it at the countywide level. A project consists of a topic, research plan, forms for safety, experimenting, writing down results and methods, and presenting to the science fair committee judges. “We have to start it over because it messed up” said Wendy Riester. This class is informative and relies mainly on the scientific process. This class should be in your schedule.

This is a picture of the chemistry classroom. It is in Wendy Riesters. This picture includes the lab equipment which will be used almost every week.
