A Breach of Academic Integrity

Academic dishonesty or “cheating” as it is called is when someone uses unfair resources during a time when they should not be available. Some examples of academic dishonesty are using a cell phone while testing/ quizzing, sharing answers, and asking for answers when taking a quiz/test. Some teachers require students to put phones where the teacher can see them. One such teacher is Ms. Makayla Davis who requires phones to be put in a specific place in the classroom or in a backpack. “I’ve gotten tired of people using their phones in class,” said Ms. Davis (Teacher). These are some forms of academic dishonesty while testing or quizzing. Some teachers will give students a zero and void their opportunity to take said quiz/test again. One such teacher is Brittany Carrier, a teacher of Agricultural Science. “If you cheat then I will not let you retake the quiz,” said Brittany Carrier (teacher). There is also a few other forms of dishonesty such as plagiarism. Plagiarism is using someone else’s words or writing as your own without giving the credit to the individual who is being referenced. Plagiarism is not only against the policy at schools, it is also illegal. Sharing credentials for websites provided by the school is also a breach of academic integrity because of the improper use of technology involved. Punishments for academic dishonesty at Okeechobee high school can range from getting a zero on a test to being suspended. It is not recommended to breach this integrity due to the punishment. Unlike high school in college when people are caught cheating it is not uncommon to drop them from the course or fail them immediately. If severe enough it can lead to expulsion.

Doing your own work means that the high school expects students to not cheat and not plagiarize. When it says to follow the classroom procedures it also means that a student should not cheat. To do so would be against most if not all teacher’s class procedures.
