The New digital Age

As we humans evolve. So do our ideas and technology. These ideas and ideologies define who we are as a species, while our tools and devices show how far we have come and progressed as a community. One of the humans’ greatest weapons is the ability of forethought, the ability to imagine the future in many possible iterations and then to actually create the future we imagine. We have come so far that we are trying to remove our disabilities and the obstacles that limit us from reaching beyond the peak. Enter Neuralink, a device that uses brainwaves to do what we thought was only in the future and beyond. Elon Musk, the inventor of Neuralink states “the company’s brain chip is the ‘future’ of smartwatches and phones. Neuralink is on track to start implanting its tech into humans by the end of the year”. The Neuralink uses the neurons in your brain, of which there are 86 million neurons! These neurons receive and send out information. The official Neuralink website cites “Although neurons come in many different types, they generally have three parts: a dendrite which receives a signal, a cell body called a soma which computes the signal, and an axon which sends a signal out.” These neurons are connected through the axon-dendrite connections called Synapses. This new technology will revolutionize the entire industry because Neuralink is an absolute game changer as it utilizes your brain and lets you do unthinkable things like connecting through a computer to let you move the mouse or press on the keyboard just by thinking! This can be used to play video games with your thoughts, this might seem very underwhelming but the stated examples are just the tip of the iceberg.

This week I ask a staff teacher of Okeechobee High School about their thoughts and how they think this will change the world whether it is for the better or worse. This week’s guest is Aaron Newsom, a history teacher from Okeechobee High School. I asked Newsom a multitude of questions that ask their thoughts on this topic. I asked Mr. Newsom, “How do you feel about the latest technology from Elon Musk, the ‘Neuralink'”? Aaron replied “Definitely an interesting concept. Sounds like something from a Ray Bradbury novel.” I then asked him, “How do you think this will affect his future jobs and opportunities?” He then responded “I would probably have to wait and see if this catches on or is more of a fad. From what I’ve read, it looks like it could allow people to work digitally in a more effective manner.” and for the final question that was asked, “Do you want to try this ‘Neuralink’ yourself”, Newsom then stated, “I wouldn’t want to be the first one to have it implanted, but I am interested in learning more about it.” From these responses, we can see that this history teacher from Florida is enthusiastic but still hesitant about the new equipment for the digital field being released for the public. Some are concerned that inserting a computer chip into your brain may have severe backlash, but until we get live testing and data then we will just have to wait it out. This concludes this week of history, be safe and have a blessed day.
