A Telegram is any device or system that allows the transmission of information by coded signal over a distance. The first transcontinental telegram sent via the telegraph in the United States was a monumental achievement in communication technology. On October 24, 1861, the Western Union Telegraph Company sent the first message from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., ending the Pony Express. This telegram marked a significant step forward in the history of communication, eliminating the need for the arduous journey of Pony Express riders. The telegram was sent along 6,000 miles of overland and underwater telegraph lines. It had taken the Telegraph Company three years of hard work and labor to complete the project. Completing the first transcontinental telegram marked a significant moment in communication technology, and its effects can still be felt today. The Telegraph was an important piece of history cause even today we use them in all different types of ways, like the telephone. The telephone helps us communicate, meaning it revolutionized the world of business and accelerated the operations of numerous professions. “Without the telegraph, we would be in a very different society,” Gabriella Villarreal said.

This is a picture I took earlier today of a student’s iPhone to show how far we have come from a telegraph.
