On March 20th, the local Land Judging team went to practice at a local ranch. The team went over several regions of the ranch, identifying different sections of the soil. Several factors take place in determining an areas land class. These factors are permeability, drainage, slope, texture, organic matter, and erosion. Each of these factors have varying levels, each level providing a different score. After scoring each, add them together in a specific order. The highest number will automatically make it at least that number. So if any category has a 4, then the land would automatically be a land class 4, then for example there are two category threes, that would make it a land class 6. We skip land class 5 due to it not existing in Florida. Then on the back there are 33 possible things to mark, such as nitrogen reduction, lime benefits, field windbreaks, etc. On March 20th the teams coach, Brian Dryden said “Land judging is a very intimidating CDE, but anyone can do it if they study enough”
