President Smites Those of Injustice!

In this Week of History, on September 22, 1862, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, a document that started the freedom of slaves. The Emancipation Proclamation had a cause and effect on history, causing the civil war a second time for the reform of the Union, and the freedom of slaves. Abraham Lincoln was the first president to speak about the wrongdoings of slavery, presidents do not do this usually as it could affect their political status and the south or north part of the states could have a bad impression of him as there are states and people that favor slavery. The emancipation proclamation put out the date of the freedom of more than 3 million slaves. On September 22, the president announced that enslaved people in areas still in rebellion within 100 days would be free after his win in the Civil War. President Lincoln declared “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebel states “are, and henceforward shall be free.”  This also allowed black men into the military. A rough estimate of 180,000 African Americans went on to serve in the army, while another 18,000 served in the navy.

“I think his beard is cool” Ethan Boney (11) said.
